Biomass / Woodfuel heating

Biomass is living and dead biological material such as wood and animal waste. Wood in the form of logs, chips, and pellets as well as cereal grains can be used in domestic and other small scale systems to provide heating and hot water.

Modern wood fuel boilers are much more “user-friendly” than a log fire, and burn energy more efficiently than oil and gas boilers, at around 92%. They are fully controllable and a good alternative to oil or electricity in areas that are not on the gas network.

Woodfuel is considered to be a renewable source as although it gives off carbon dioxide as you burn it, it only gives off the amount of carbon dioxide that it has absorbed in its lifetime. It is important however to burn wood that is sourced locally to minimse the amount of transportation required.
