Dorset Energy Advice Centre
Why we work with volunteers?
Working with volunteers enables DEAC to broaden the scope of its work, hence increasing the number of householders we can help to save energy, money and carbon. It also provides interesting opportunities for volunteers to learn more about environmental issues.
What do our volunteers do?
Currently we have three groups of volunteers, giving advice in Weymouth, Christchurch and Bridport libraries. We provide training and support and equip them with tools and resources such as energy saving lightbulbs, leaflets and home energy questionnaires. What’s the point of that?
Volunteers are able to give basic energy advice and to point people in our direction to seek more detailed advice. In Christchurch volunteers are advising around 3000 people every year! Statistics show that households receiving energy advice save an average of £58 per year and half a tonne of carbon dioxide. So in Christchurch that’s a saving of £165,880 or 1412 tonnes of carbon dioxide!
Opportunities for volunteers
Currently we have groups of volunteers in Weymouth, Bridport and Christchurch libraries, each group is keen to recruit new members and we are keen to support new volunteer groups. We also work on other projects where opportunities for volunteers may arise. If you are interested in volunteering with DEAC please contact us.
Weymouth
John Tomblin leads a group of volunteers who give advice for two half days a week in the library. The service was launched in November 07 by the Mayor.
Christchurch
Colin Dewsnap leads a group of volunteers who give advice for three mornings a week in the library. The group has been established for several years and has advised around 10,000 people!
